World Wildlife Day 2020

On the 3rd of March, we celebrate World Wildlife Day. The year 2020 is known as a "biodiversity super year". This day provides an opportunity to deliver progress for the conservation of nature and wild animal species in response to the global sustainable development goals.

This year's theme for World Wildlife Day 2020 is "Sustaining all life on earth" which addresses all wild animals and plant species that compose our biodiversity. The theme also explores the importance of using natural resources in a sustainable manner, in support of achieving SDG Goal 14 (Life below water), Goal 15 (Life on land), Goal 1 (No poverty) and Goal 12 (Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns).

World Wildlife day celebrates the beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and recognizes the multitude of benefits that their conservation provides to people. This day also reminds us of the urgent need to fight against wildlife crime and human-induced reduction of species, which have wide-ranging economic, environmental and social impacts. This issue remains urgent in conserving our biodiversity. Therefore, Sustainable Development Goal 15 focuses on halting biodiversity loss as a vital component in achieving sustainability.

On this day, all member states and organizations of the United Nations call all global, regional, sub-regional organizations, non-governmental organizations and all individuals to;

"1. Observe and raise awareness of the theme for World Wildlife Day 2020.

2. Associate this day of celebration with major national and international conservation events.

3. Build collaborative partnerships.

4. Build collaborative partnerships conservation and sustainable use of wild animals and plants and use targeted strategies to influence consumers behaviour and reduce demand for illegally sourced wildlife and their products.

5. Make use of the World Wildlife Day logo as widely as possible".
