Uprooted: Child Displacement

Venezuela has been undergoing a financial crisis that has taken the country from being a leading regional actor, to one of the economically unstable countries in the region. The economic hardships that befell the Venezuelan people, have caused (according to the UN) around 4 million people to migrate out of the country. As of 2019, UNICEF claims that 1.1 million children who have been uprooted from Venezuela and those that remain in the country or live in transit countries lack proper living conditions and protection.

The economic situation of Venezuela is not exclusively affecting Venezuelans. Around 4.9 million people in the region require assistance due to the massive efflux of refugees. UNICEF submitted a request for $69.5 million dollars to be used in assistance to these Venezuelan children in the Latin American/ Caribbean region. UNICEF has also deployed volunteers to work with local governments, host communities and partners to ensure access to safe drinking water and sanitation, protection, education and health services for uprooted children and those in communities at risk. It also works abroad with host countries to ensure the rights and needs of these uprooted children remain up to standards.

The crisis in Venezuela does not seem to have a foreseeable end, because of this its important to keep an eye on these displaced people and ensuring that their human rights aren't infringed on.
