On the 20th of November 2019, we celebrate Universal Children day, UNICEF'S annual day of action for children, by children to unite and take action for children's rights.
60 years ago, on this day, the UN General Assembly adopted the “Declaration of the Rights of the Child” (1959) and a historic commitment by world leaders was made by signing the “Convention on the rights of the children” in 1989. This year will have an extra special celebration, as it marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Children. In these 30 years of children's rights, we have transformed children's lives for the better all around the world. It has been a commitment to all by safeguarding the lives, childhoods and dreams of every single child.
Our children telling us, loud and clear: it is time for every child, to have every right. Today, we stand up for children's rights, will you? Know your rights and speak out #worldchildrensday.
On this day, we expect many events to occur for this special day. Children will be taking over roles in the media, politics, business, sports and entertainment to shine a spotlight on issues that matter to them. Landmark buildings all around the world will also light up in the colour blue to show their support for child rights. You too can help turn the world blue by wearing something blue, decorate your entire classroom or office blue. Children will also travel to major capitals to participate in national summits to discuss the promises leaders have made and actions our children are willing to take in fulfilling children's rights.
In these 30 years of children’s rights we have…:
*Reduced deaths of children before reaching the age of 5 by 50% since 1989.
*Reduced the proportion of malnourished children by almost 50% since 1990.
*Ensured that 2.6 billion people now have cleaner drinking water today than in 1990.
But we still need your help to ensure every child has every right because...
*262 million children and youth are still out of school.
*650 million women and girls are still married before their 18th birthday.
*1 in 4 children will still live in areas with a critical lack of water resources by 2040.
In our world today, there are still a lot of lives we can change and give all children the childhoods they deserve. Too many childhoods are cut short in this tought yet absolutely fascinating world. Universal Children's Day offers something for every one of us. It provides us with an inspirational drive towards advocacy, promotion and celebration of children's rights. Your voice and action is the fundamental power that will stimulate and build a better world for our children. It is up to you and me to achieve change in our society, fulfil our commitment to the children and take action for child's rights now and forever.
