Around 2,200 migrants and asylum seekers- of which there are 700 children -are stranded at the US-Mexico border while waiting for the US Court System to process their applications in order to move to the US. The conditions these children and families find themselves living in are below average, and those that have been waiting for months worry about basic necessities and lack of safety at the camps.
UNICEF Mexico has responded to the situation in Matamoros in order to provide:
Creating child-friendly spaces and providing psycho social support
Providing Early Childhood Development (ECD) interventions
Coordinating water, sanitation and hygiene services
Working in the community to protect migrant children and keep families together.
UNICEF urges the Mexican Government to enact and implement the Protocol for the Protection of Migrant Children. This Protocol establishes the necessary interventions that Mexican institutions should provide when a migrant child enters the territory to guarantee that their rights are fulfilled.
The longer these people have to wait, the more risk they take up.
